About Researching Competitor Keywords

Why research competitor keywords?

Every site that ranks has, without meaning to, published a list of what search engines think it is about. To research competitor keywords is simply to read that list - the terms a rival actually appears for, rather than the ones their marketing pages claim to target.
The distance between those two things is usually the interesting part. A company can position itself around one phrase and quietly earn most of its traffic from something adjacent it never planned for, and the only way to see that is from the outside.
It is also the fastest way into an unfamiliar market. Rather than guessing which terms matter, you start from what is demonstrably working for somebody already competing in it.

What to look for in a rival's keyword list

The list is more useful read selectively than top to bottom. Five things repay attention:
  • Terms they rank for and you do not - the plainest gaps in your own coverage.
  • Terms you both rank for, where the comparison is position rather than presence.
  • Their brand terms, which inflate any headline traffic figure and should be read separately.
  • Unexpected terms, which reveal demand neither of you set out to serve.
  • Terms with real estimated traffic rather than impressive-looking volume.
That last distinction matters more than it sounds. A high-volume term a competitor ranks eighth for sends almost nobody anywhere, while a modest term they own outright may be quietly doing most of the work.

Choosing which competitors to research

The competitors worth studying are rarely the ones you name in a pitch. Your commercial rivals and your search rivals overlap less than you would expect, and a publisher or a marketplace can sit above you on the terms you care about without ever selling what you sell.
So research competitor keywords for whoever actually appears when you search your own core terms. That set - however unfamiliar - is who you are competing with for the click.
Three or four is usually enough. A term appearing across all of them describes the market; a term unique to one is that company placing a bet, which may or may not be paying off.

Turning research into your own rankings

A gap is only worth chasing if you can plausibly close it. Before committing to a term, look at what is already ranking for it and ask honestly whether your site has anything comparable to offer - depth, authority on the subject, or a genuinely better answer.
The terms where a competitor ranks somewhere between fifth and fifteenth are usually the best starting point. Those positions signal a market that is reachable rather than locked up, which is a far better bet than the term everybody is fighting over at the top.
Work in clusters rather than single terms, too. Rivals rarely own one keyword in isolation, and matching a whole topic tends to move you further than picking off individual phrases.

Competitor research and AI search in 2026

Ranking data has become a proxy for something broader. Pages that already rank well are the ones AI answers tend to draw on, so a competitor with deep organic coverage of a topic is usually also the one being quoted when somebody asks an assistant about it.
That makes their keyword list a reasonable first read on their AI visibility too, at least at the topic level. Where a rival owns a cluster of related terms, assume they are also the default source for that subject.
It is only a proxy, though. Citation and ranking come apart often enough that the two are worth measuring separately once you know which topics matter.

How to research competitor keywords with this tool

Enter any domain and the tool looks up the organic keywords we hold for it in our index, ordered by the traffic each one is likely driving. It works on a competitor exactly as it does on your own site, so the quickest first pass is to run both and compare.
Results come from our index rather than a live search, so read them as a picture of what a site is known for rather than a real-time position check.

Where to go next

A rival's keywords are one part of the picture. Size the traffic behind them with the website traffic checker, see what the same domain is paying for with the PPC checker tool, and turn the gaps you find into terms of your own with the keyword generator.
