Free FAQ Schema Generator

Build valid FAQPage JSON-LD from your questions and answers, then paste it straight into your page. Add as many pairs as you need.

Schema markup states the facts on your page in a form built to be read by machines, rather than leaving them to be inferred from your layout. Fill in what applies below, then paste the result into the page it describes - ideally in the head, though anywhere in the document works.

Mark up what the page is actually about. One well-chosen type beats several speculative ones.

About FAQ Schema

What FAQ schema does

FAQ schema, or FAQPage markup, states in machine-readable form that a page carries a set of questions and their answers. The questions are already on the page; the markup means a search engine reads them as questions rather than working it out from your headings.
It changes nothing a visitor sees. It is a block of JSON-LD in the source listing each question and the answer that belongs to it, using a vocabulary search engines and AI assistants both understand.
This generator builds that block from the pairs you enter and hands it back ready to paste in.

Be realistic about rich results

FAQ markup used to produce expandable questions beneath a search result, and a great deal of writing about it still assumes that. Google narrowed those rich results sharply in August 2023, and they are now shown only for well-known authoritative government and health sites.
For almost every other site, adding FAQ schema will not change how the listing looks. Any tool or article promising extra space in the results is describing how things worked several years ago.
That is not an argument against using it, but it is an argument against expecting a ranking or click-through win from it. The reasons below are the ones that still hold.

Why it is still worth adding

Answer engines assembling a response need facts they can rely on, and a question paired unambiguously with its answer is close to the ideal shape for that. Marking up an FAQ is one of the few ways to hand over content already structured the way an assistant wants to consume it.
Other consumers read it too. Search engines beyond Google, internal site search, and anything else parsing your pages benefit from an explicit list of questions rather than an inferred one.
It also imposes a useful discipline. Writing the pairs out separates the genuine questions from the padding, and an FAQ that is hard to mark up is usually one that was not really an FAQ.

Rules that actually get enforced

The one rule to take seriously is that the questions and answers must be visible on the page, in the same words. Markup describing content a visitor cannot see is the fastest route to a manual action, and it is checked.
  • Mark up only questions genuinely present on the page.
  • Keep the answer in the markup the same as the answer in the text.
  • Use it for real questions, not headings rewritten to end in a question mark.
  • One FAQPage block per page, listing every pair, rather than one block each.
  • Leave out questions whose answer is a link and nothing else.
  • Update the markup when the answers change, which is what usually gets forgotten.

Writing questions worth marking up

Write the question as somebody would ask it rather than as a topic label. "How long does delivery take?" is a question; "Delivery times" is a heading, and marking it up as a question helps nobody.
Answer completely in the first sentence, then elaborate if useful. Anything reading your markup is likely to take the opening line and discard the rest, so an answer that builds to its point loses it.
Keep each pair independent. An answer that depends on the one above it makes no sense when quoted on its own, which is exactly how it will be used.

Using the FAQ schema generator

Enter each question with its answer, adding as many pairs as the page carries, and generate. Empty pairs are ignored, so there is no need to fill every row.
The output is JSON-LD, the format Google documents as preferred and the only one you can add without touching the page's existing markup. Paste it into the page the questions appear on, ideally in the head, though anywhere in the document works.
For other types of structured data, the full schema markup generator covers organisation, local business, article, product and breadcrumb markup as well.
