About Identity Schema

What is identity schema?

Identity schema is the structured data that says who is behind a website. In practice that means an Organization block for a company or a Person block for an individual, naming the entity, its logo, its official site and the profiles that belong to it.
Most sites carry schema of some kind - a breadcrumb trail, an article block, a product - without ever stating who publishes it. That is the gap this check looks for.
The tool reads the page you enter and reports whether identity markup is present.

Why stating your identity explicitly matters

Search engines and AI assistants both build a picture of an organisation by gathering mentions from across the web and deciding which refer to the same thing. Names are ambiguous, and plenty of companies share one.
Identity schema removes the guesswork. It says, in a form designed to be read by machines, that this site belongs to this named entity, with this logo, and that these social profiles are the same organisation.
That is what turns scattered mentions into one accumulating reputation instead of several fragments that never add up.

What to include

  • The legal or trading name, spelled the same way you use it everywhere else.
  • A logo, at a stable URL, which is what appears alongside your name in results.
  • The canonical URL of the site itself.
  • sameAs entries for the social profiles and directory listings that are genuinely yours.
  • Contact details, where you publish them anyway.
  • For a personal site, a Person block naming the role and the organisation.
Put it on the homepage at minimum. Sitewide is better, and most templates make that trivial.

How this relates to AI search in 2026

Assistants answering a question about a company are assembling what they know from many sources at once, and they weigh agreement between those sources heavily. Identity markup is the cleanest way to state which sources are you.
It also feeds the expertise and trust signals that decide whether a source is worth citing. An author with a Person block linked to a real organisation is a more attributable source than an anonymous page.
None of this works if the details disagree with what you publish elsewhere, so consistency across your site, your profiles and your listings is the part worth checking.

What this tool checks

It looks for Organization or Person structured data on the page you enter and reports whether it is present.
It confirms presence rather than auditing every property, so markup that exists but names little still passes. Treat a pass as the starting point and check the contents against the list above.

Where to go next

Identity is one part of a wider markup picture. Review all the structured data on the page, check your local business details if you serve a physical area, and confirm the social media profiles you name are actually linked from the site.
