About Rewriting Paragraphs
Why paragraphs fail
Paragraph problems are structural rather than verbal, which is what separates them from sentence problems. The sentences can all be fine while the paragraph does not work.
The usual causes are order and scope. Either the point arrives last when it should arrive first, or the paragraph is trying to cover two ideas that each deserve their own.
A paragraph rewriter is the right tool when rewriting individual sentences has not helped. That is generally the sign that the arrangement rather than the wording is at fault.
What a good paragraph does
- Opens with its claim rather than building toward it.
- Covers one idea, and splits when a second appears.
- Supports the claim with something concrete: an example, a number, a consequence.
- Follows on from the paragraph before it without needing a transition phrase to say so.
- Stays short enough to read as a block, since long paragraphs are skipped rather than read.
- Makes sense on its own, because many readers will encounter it that way.
Common mistakes
- Burying the point in the final sentence.
- Two ideas sharing a paragraph because they arrived together in the draft.
- Paragraphs so long the reader loses the thread halfway.
- Relying on "however" and "furthermore" to create a logic the content does not have.
- Rewriting a paragraph that should be deleted.
How this relates to AI search
Paragraphs are the unit passages are extracted at, so a self-contained paragraph opening with its claim is far more likely to be quoted accurately than one that depends on the two before it.
Splitting a double paragraph therefore does double duty: it helps the reader scanning and it produces two extractable units instead of one ambiguous one.
None of that requires writing for machines. It is the same discipline that makes a piece easy to read.
Where a paragraph rewriter helps, and where it does not
It is good at reordering and at showing you a version that leads with the point, which is often enough to see what the original was missing.
It cannot tell you the paragraph belongs in a different section, or that the piece would be better without it. Those are structural decisions above its scope.
If a rewritten paragraph still does not work, the problem is usually in the outline rather than the prose.
Using the paragraph rewriter
Enter a paragraph or two and the tool returns a rewritten version. Feeding it one paragraph at a time keeps the structure recognisable.
Then check whether the rewrite leads with the claim, and whether it dropped anything the original was carrying. If the result contains two ideas, split it yourself.
