Keyword Difficulty Checker

SEOptimer’s Keyword Difficulty Checker scores how hard a keyword is to rank for, alongside its search volume, cost per click, search intent and the backlink profile of the pages currently ranking.

Find the Keywords Worth Ranking For, Then Watch Them Move

Real search volume, CPC and competition data for any market, so you know which phrases are worth the work before you start. Then track your positions daily on Google and Bing, on desktop and mobile, and down to the city for local search - with scheduled reports that show clients exactly what changed.

About Keyword Difficulty

What is keyword difficulty?

Keyword difficulty estimates how hard it would be to reach the first page of results for a term, on a scale of 0 to 100. It describes the competition already holding those positions rather than anything about the phrase itself.
The number is built from the strength of the pages currently ranking, chiefly the size and quality of the link profiles behind them. A term is difficult because well-established pages occupy it, not because the words are unusual or the topic is technical.
A keyword difficulty check is therefore a competitive reading rather than a verdict on the keyword. It tells you what standing in the way, and says nothing at all about whether the term is worth having.

How to read the score

The bands are conventions rather than thresholds. Broadly, terms in the low range are open to a competent page, the middle range asks for genuine authority behind it, and the upper range is a campaign rather than an article.
Read the score relative to your own site rather than in the abstract. A 40 is a routine target for an established domain and an unrealistic one for a site published last month, and the same figure means different things to each.
High volume paired with low difficulty deserves suspicion rather than celebration. It usually means the term is ambiguous, seasonal, or served by results that satisfy the search without a click, and the backlink averages beneath the score are the quickest way to see which.

Does keyword difficulty still matter in 2026?

It matters as a way of ordering work. Most sites have far more candidate terms than capacity, and difficulty is the cheapest way to sort a long list into what is reachable now and what is a project for later.
It is worth remembering how much a single figure is compressing. Two terms scoring 45 can demand entirely different work, one needing a stronger page and the other needing a different kind of page altogether, and the score cannot tell them apart.
The score also describes today. It is a snapshot of who currently ranks, so it moves as the first page turns over, and a term that looked closed a year ago is worth checking again rather than assumed.

How keyword difficulty relates to AI search

AI answers are usually assembled from pages that already rank well, so difficulty remains a fair proxy for the cost of being cited. Earning a place on the first page and earning a place in an answer are largely the same piece of work.
Where the score understates the picture is on specific, question-shaped terms. These often carry low difficulty precisely because they are easy to answer, which is also why an AI summary tends to answer them outright and the ranking page sees fewer visits than the position suggests.
The practical response is to read difficulty next to intent rather than on its own. An easy term that ends the search elsewhere is worth less than a harder one that sends someone to you ready to act.

Keyword difficulty best practices

  • Compare difficulty within a topic, not across unrelated ones.
  • Read it alongside volume, intent and cost per click; on its own it ranks nothing.
  • Weigh the score against your own site standing rather than treating it as absolute.
  • Look at the backlink averages behind the number instead of trusting the number alone.
  • Treat an easy score on a high-volume term as a prompt to look closer, not a free win.
  • Re-check periodically, since the first page changes and the score changes with it.

What this tool checks

The keyword difficulty checker looks the term up in our index and reports the difficulty score together with the figures that give it context: monthly search volume and its recent trend, cost per click and advertiser competition, the search intent recorded for the term, and the average backlink and referring domain counts of the pages currently ranking.
Unlike keyword difficulty tools that render a full results page alongside, this one deliberately stops at the metrics. The overview stands on its own, and a live results page is a separate question our SERP tools already answer.
Figures come from our index rather than a live search, so they describe the picture held for that term and location rather than what a browser would show you this second. That suits planning, and is the wrong instrument for confirming a change you made yesterday.

Where to go next

Difficulty tells you the cost of a term; the rest of the decision is elsewhere. Build a longer list of candidates with the keyword generator, see which of them a rival already holds using competitor keyword research, and check what the first page actually looks like with the SERP rank checker.
