About Image Optimization

What is image optimization?

Image optimization means serving pictures at the size they are actually displayed, in an efficient format, compressed as far as the eye allows. Images are usually the heaviest thing on a page by a wide margin, so this is where most weight problems begin and end.
The most common failure is not compression but dimensions. A 4000 pixel wide photograph displayed in a 400 pixel column means the visitor downloads roughly a hundred times the data they can actually see, and no amount of compression rescues that.
An image optimization checker is worth running because the problem is invisible at the desk. The page looks correct, loads acceptably on a fast connection, and costs a fortune on a phone.

Does image optimization still matter in 2026?

It is the single biggest lever most sites have on load time, and the one most often left untouched because nothing appears broken.
Formats have moved on considerably. WebP and AVIF deliver the same visual quality at a fraction of the size, and browser support is no longer a reason to avoid them. Sites still serving large JPEGs are leaving an easy saving on the table.
It also feeds directly into Core Web Vitals. The largest element on most pages is an image, so the measurement of when a page appears is frequently a measurement of how quickly one file arrives.

How images relate to AI search

Weight affects how readily a page is fetched, which is the indirect route. The direct one is more interesting: images now carry meaning that systems can read.
Original diagrams, screenshots and charts are exactly the kind of first-hand material that distinguishes a page from generic text, and they are increasingly interpreted rather than skipped.
Pair them with descriptive alt text and explanatory copy nearby, so the information they contain is available as text as well as pixels. A chart nobody can read in text is a chart that cannot be quoted.

Image best practices

  • Resize to the largest dimensions actually displayed before uploading.
  • Serve WebP or AVIF with a fallback for anything older.
  • Use responsive image markup so phones do not download desktop-sized files.
  • Lazy-load anything below the fold, but never the main image at the top.
  • Always set width and height so space is reserved and the layout does not jump.
  • Write real alt text; optimization and accessibility are the same job done properly.

What this tool checks

The image optimization checker examines the images the page loads and reports whether they appear adequately optimised.
It assesses delivery rather than editorial judgement, so it cannot tell whether an image earns its place on the page at all. The heaviest image on many pages is a decorative one nobody would miss.

Where to go next

Images sit at the centre of both weight and accessibility. Check what the page totals with the webpage file size tool, confirm every image carries alt text, and see how the result affects real visitors with the Core Web Vitals test.
