About AI Overviews

What is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is the block of generated text Google places at the top of a results page, above the familiar list of links. Rather than pointing you at a page that might answer the question, it writes the answer directly, drawing on several sources at once.
They do not appear for every search. Google shows them mainly for informational and exploratory queries - how something works, which option suits a situation, what the differences are - and much less often for navigational or straightforwardly transactional ones.
Where one does appear it changes the shape of the page considerably. The ten blue links are still there, but they now sit beneath a summary that has already had a go at answering the question, and that shifts what any position on the page is actually worth.

Why AI Overviews matter in 2026

The straightforward reason is space. An AI Overview can fill most of the first screen, so the organic result you worked to earn may now sit below the fold on a query where it used to be the first thing anybody saw.
The subtler reason is that some searches now end inside the overview. A searcher who gets what they needed from the summary has no reason to click anything, which is why impressions can hold steady while clicks fall on exactly the informational queries that used to convert readers into visitors.
That makes the overview itself worth measuring, not just the ranking beneath it. Two sites at position three on the same query can be having completely different weeks, depending on whether Google is quoting either of them in the block above.

Being cited in an AI Overview

Underneath each overview Google lists the sources it drew on, and those links are where the remaining traffic goes. Earning a place in that list is a distinct outcome from ranking, and this is the part an AI overviews checker is built to measure.
The two do not track each other as closely as you would expect. A page can hold a strong organic position and never be referenced in the summary sitting above it, while a page well down the first page gets quoted repeatedly - which is why a rankings report alone cannot tell you how visible you are.
Citations also carry more weight per appearance than a position does. Being named as a source puts a brand in front of somebody at the moment they are being given an answer, and that is a different kind of exposure from being the fourth link on a list they may never reach.

What makes a page citable

Nobody outside Google knows the selection rules, but the patterns across cited pages are consistent enough to act on:
  • Answering a specific question directly, near the top, rather than building to it.
  • Clear structure - headings that ask the question the section answers.
  • Facts stated plainly, with figures and dates rather than vague characterisation.
  • Evidence of expertise: named authors, sources, and a reason to be believed.
  • Content that is genuinely accessible to crawlers, not assembled client-side.
  • Freshness where the subject moves, since summaries favour current sources.

How to read the results

Start by comparing this list against your organic rankings. Terms you rank well for but are not cited on are the clearest opportunities, because the page has already proved it is relevant and simply is not being quoted.
Citations on terms you did not expect are worth as much attention. They tell you which part of your content a model finds quotable, which is often not the part you invested most in.
An empty result is information rather than a failure. Running the AI overviews checker on a domain in a transactional or local market frequently returns nothing at all, simply because the queries it ranks for do not trigger an overview in the first place - that is a fact about the market, not a verdict on the site.

What this AI Overview checker does

The tool looks up the keywords for which the domain appears as a cited source inside Google AI Overviews, ordered by the traffic those keywords are likely driving.
Results come from our index rather than a live search. AI Overviews are volatile - the same query can produce a summary one day and not the next - so read this as the shape of where you are being cited rather than a guarantee of what any single search shows right now.

Where to go next

Getting quoted depends on a model being able to reach your content and make sense of it, so an AI overview checker is most useful alongside the checks that explain its result. Confirm the AI crawlers are not blocked with the AI crawler check, see how much of your page actually renders for a machine using the LLM readability checker, and compare all of it against the organic rankings you already hold.

Find the Keywords Worth Ranking For, Then Watch Them Move

Real search volume, CPC and competition data for any market, so you know which phrases are worth the work before you start. Then track your positions daily on Google and Bing, on desktop and mobile, and down to the city for local search - with scheduled reports that show clients exactly what changed.
