About Title Tags

What is a title tag?

The title tag is a snippet of HTML that sits in the head of a page and names it. Browsers show it on the tab, search engines usually show it as the clickable headline in results, and social platforms fall back to it when no other title is supplied. It is not visible on the page itself, which is why it is so often left as a template default.
Because it is the first thing a searcher reads about your page, the title tag does double duty: it tells a search engine what the page is about, and it persuades a person to click rather than scroll past. A technically correct title that reads like a filing label will still lose traffic to a competitor whose title reads like an answer.

Do title tags still matter in 2026?

Yes, and arguably more than they used to. The title tag has survived every major shift in search because it is the one piece of text a publisher controls that appears in almost every context a page is surfaced in: organic results, browser tabs, bookmarks, shared links, internal site search and, increasingly, the citation lists attached to AI-generated answers.
What has changed is the competition for attention. Results pages now carry ads, shopping units, video carousels, discussion threads and AI summaries, so an organic listing occupies less of the screen than it once did. The title is what has to earn the click in that smaller space.

How title tags relate to AI search

Large language models and AI search features do not read a page the way a person does. They work from text, and they lean on structural signals to decide what a document is about before deciding whether to quote it. The title tag is one of the clearest of those signals: a short, unambiguous statement of the page topic, positioned where every parser looks first.
That matters in two places. When a model is deciding which sources answer a prompt, a precise title makes a page easier to match to the question. When an AI answer cites its sources, the title is frequently the label a reader sees and clicks, in the same way it works in a traditional result.
The practical advice does not change much: write a title that states the topic plainly, rather than one that relies on the surrounding page for context. A title that only makes sense once you are already on the page is a weak signal to a search engine and a weaker one to a model.

How long should a title tag be?

Google does not count characters when deciding what to display, it measures the rendered width of the text in pixels and truncates with an ellipsis when a title is too wide for the results layout. In practice that lands at roughly 50 to 60 characters, though a title full of narrow letters survives longer than one set in capitals.
This tool uses the 50 to 60 character range as its target, counting every character including spaces. Treat that as a guide rather than a quota: a short, specific title beats a padded one, and the words that matter should appear early enough to survive truncation on a narrow screen.

Title tag best practices

Strong titles tend to share the same handful of traits:
  • Unique to the page. Duplicate titles across a site make it harder for search engines to tell those pages apart, and harder for a searcher to pick the right result.
  • Led by the topic. Put the phrase the page is genuinely about near the front, before any brand name or boilerplate, so it survives truncation.
  • Written for a person. It appears in a list of competing results, so it has to earn a click, not merely describe a document.
  • Understandable on its own. A reader seeing the title in an AI citation or a shared link has none of the surrounding page for context.
  • Honest about the content. A title promising something the page does not deliver produces a click and an immediate bounce, which helps nobody.
  • Free of keyword stuffing. Repeating a phrase in several variations reads badly to people and offers no advantage with search engines.
  • Matched to the page heading without being identical to it. The title competes in a results list; the heading introduces the page to someone who has already arrived.

What this tool checks

The tool loads your page, reads the first title tag it finds in the HTML, and measures its length in characters including spaces. It then reports one of four outcomes:
  • No title tag found, which leaves search engines to invent a headline from the page content.
  • A title shorter than 50 characters, which usually means there is room to say something more useful.
  • A title between 50 and 60 characters, which passes.
  • A title longer than 60 characters, which risks being cut off in results before the useful part is reached.
Length is a starting point, not a verdict. Whether a title is unique across your site, whether it reads well, and whether it is stuffed with keywords are judgements the tool does not make for you, so a passing result still deserves a read-through against the best practices above.

Why the title you write is not always the title shown

Search engines reserve the right to rewrite a title when they judge that a different one better matches the query, and they do so on a meaningful share of results. That is not a reason to stop writing them carefully: a rewrite usually happens because the original was vague, duplicated across pages, or stuffed with keywords, and the supplied title remains the strongest signal available.
If your titles are consistently being replaced, treat it as feedback on the titles rather than a quirk of the algorithm.

Fixing it on your platform

Most content management systems expose the title tag in a page settings panel or through an SEO plugin, rather than requiring you to edit the HTML directly. On WordPress it is usually set by your SEO plugin, on Shopify it sits under the search engine listing section of a product or page, and on Wix it is in the page SEO panel.
Once changed, the new title will not appear in search results immediately. It takes effect the next time the page is crawled, which can be anything from hours to weeks depending on how often the page is visited.

Where to go next

A title tag rarely fails on its own. If this page needs work, it is worth checking the meta description that sits alongside it in the same result, the H1 heading that repeats the topic on the page itself, and the SERP snippet preview to see how the pair actually looks to a searcher.
