Finding When an Article Was Published

Why publication dates are so often hidden

Plenty of articles show no date at all, and it is rarely an accident. Removing it makes a piece look permanently current, which is tempting for anyone whose traffic comes from search - and unhelpful for anyone trying to judge whether the advice still holds.
The date is usually still there, though. Even when nothing is printed on the page, most publishing systems declare it in the markup for search engines to read, and that copy is generally left alone because removing it would cost visibility.
So the question "when was this article published" has an answer far more often than the page suggests. It is just written somewhere a reader would never look.

Where the date is actually stored

Four places, in descending order of how much you should trust them:
  • Structured data - a datePublished field in the page's schema, which is an explicit statement of when it went live.
  • Meta tags - an article:published_time tag, added by most publishing platforms for social previews.
  • A time element in the markup, which may be the article date or may belong to a comment.
  • The URL, where a path like /2019/04/ is a strong hint rather than a declaration.
This tool reports which of those it read the date from, because the difference matters. A date from structured data is the publisher telling you; a date from the URL is us inferring it.

Published versus last modified

Pages carry two dates, and conflating them is how "updated for 2026" articles get away with being eight years old. Published is when the piece first appeared; modified is when it was last touched, which can mean a full rewrite or a single changed word.
Where both are declared, this tool shows both. A large gap between them is worth noticing in either direction - a piece published years ago and revised last month has probably been kept current, while one published last month and never modified is exactly as fresh as it looks.
Treat a modified date on its own with some suspicion. It is the easier of the two to refresh without changing anything a reader would notice.

Why it matters for your own pages

Search engines read these fields, and for anything where currency matters - advice, pricing, statistics, anything technical - a declared and accurate date is part of how a page is judged. Hiding it does not make a page look fresher to a search engine, which has other ways of knowing.
Readers use it as a trust signal too. An undated article on a subject that clearly moves invites the assumption that it is old and the author would rather you did not know.
The practical advice is dull but effective: declare datePublished in your structured data, keep dateModified honest, and show the date on the page. If a piece is genuinely current, you gain by saying so.

Dates and AI answers in 2026

Assistants summarising a topic have to choose which sources to lean on, and an explicit, recent date is one of the few machine-readable signals of currency available to them. An undated page is harder to place in time and easier to pass over.
That has made the structured-data version of the date more valuable than the visible one. A model parsing a page reads the schema; it does not squint at a byline.
It also cuts the other way when you are the one reading. If an answer cites a source, checking when that source was published is a quick way to work out how much weight the answer deserves.

What this tool checks

Enter a URL and the tool reads the page, extracts any publication date it declares, and reports the date alongside where it was found. Where a last-modified date is also declared, it shows that too.
It reads what the page states about itself rather than establishing when the page truly appeared. A publisher can declare any date they like, and some do - so treat the result as the page's own claim, which is exactly what a search engine sees.

Where to go next

The publication date is one of several things a page declares about itself in its markup. Check the rest of its structured data, see how the page presents in results with the SERP preview, and confirm its title tag says what you expect.
