About X Cards
What an X Card is
An X Card is the preview panel that appears under a post when someone shares your link: an image, a headline and a line of description, rather than a bare URL.
The tags that produce it are separate from Open Graph, though X falls back to Open Graph when its own are missing. Setting both is cheap and removes the guesswork.
The card type is the decision that matters most, because it changes how much space the post takes up in a timeline.
Choosing a card type
- summary_large_image - a full-width image above the text. The right default for articles and landing pages.
- summary - a small square thumbnail beside the text. Suits short updates and link roundups.
- player - for audio and video played inline, and requires approval.
- app - for driving app installs.
Most sites need the first two and never touch the others.
Common mistakes
- Declaring a large image card and supplying an image too small for it.
- Leaving out twitter:site, so nothing attributes the card to your account.
- A description that repeats the headline word for word.
- Assuming a change is live immediately - X caches cards, sometimes for a while.
- Setting X tags and skipping Open Graph, which leaves every other platform guessing.
What the card is worth
Cards are not a ranking factor. Their value is in the timeline: a post with a card occupies more space and gives a reader something to react to, and the click-through difference against a bare link is large.
The image does most of that work, which makes it the part worth spending time on rather than the wording.
Using the X Card generator
Choose a card type, fill in the rest and paste the tags into the head of the page. The @ on the usernames is added for you if you leave it off.
Set Open Graph tags too. Between them they cover everywhere a link is likely to be pasted.
