What is a cached web page?

A cached page is a copy of a page as it appeared at some earlier moment, kept by somebody other than its owner. It lets you read a page that has changed, moved or gone entirely.
This tool uses the Wayback Machine, the Internet Archive's public record of the web, which has been capturing pages since 1996. Enter an address and the most recent copy it holds opens in a new tab.
Nothing is stored or sent anywhere by us - the tool simply builds the archive address and hands you over to it.

What happened to Google's cache?

For twenty years the usual way to see a cached page was Google's own copy, reachable with a cache: search or a link in the result. Google retired that feature in 2024, and the cache: operator no longer works.
The Wayback Machine is now the practical replacement, and in most respects a better one. It keeps many copies of a page over time rather than only the latest, so you can see how something changed rather than just what it says now.
The trade-off is coverage. Google cached more or less everything it indexed; the archive captures a large but incomplete sample, and small or new sites are frequently missing.

What people use cached pages for

  • Reading a page that is down, moved or deleted.
  • Seeing what a page said before it was rewritten.
  • Recovering copy from a site you no longer control.
  • Checking what a competitor changed, and roughly when.
  • Confirming a claim about what a page used to say.
  • Finding the old URL structure of a site after a migration.
That last one is quietly the most useful for SEO work. A migration that lost its redirects is much easier to repair when you can see what the URLs used to be.

Reading an archived page carefully

An archived page is a reconstruction rather than a photograph. The HTML is captured faithfully, but stylesheets, fonts, images and scripts are fetched separately and may be missing or come from a different date, so a page can look broken while its text is exactly right.
Anything that depended on a live server will not work. Search boxes, logins, carts and most interactive features are inert, and content loaded by JavaScript after the page rendered is often absent entirely.
Check the date on the archive toolbar before drawing conclusions. The nearest capture to today might be from last week or from four years ago, and nothing on the page itself tells you which.

Which address to enter

Any reasonable form of the address works. The archive normalises what you give it, so example.com, www.example.com, http://example.com and https://example.com all reach the same record - there is no need to guess which version was archived.
Enter the full path to look up one page rather than the site. A specific page is a different record from the homepage, and the homepage will not tell you what an article said.
If nothing is archived for the address, the archive returns a not-found page rather than a suggestion. That usually means the page was never captured, which is common for small sites and for anything recent.

What this tool does

It checks the address is a plausible one, builds the archive URL for the most recent capture, and opens it in a new tab. There is no lookup and nothing to wait for.
Because the archive resolves the address itself, the tool deliberately does not rewrite what you type beyond encoding it. Guessing at a scheme or adding www would risk asking for a record other than the one you meant.
